This is a guest post from our Director of Client Relations, Madison Rhoads:

It all started at this year’s 4th of July extravaganza. We’ve all been there. Friends and family galore, celebrating America’s Independence Day with more food and beverages than the average person should eat in a week. This year however, my mindset had changed, I was going to stick with my newly found clean eating habits, and still enjoy all the good food, company, and entertainment that comes with this celebrated Holiday.

You may be wondering how this is possible without bringing your own food or offending the cook. That’s where the little things come into play. For lunch, my mom had prepared a beautiful spread of hot dogs with all the trimmings. This is a staple every 4th of July along with watching the famous Nathan’s hot dog eating contest. Nothing better than eating hot dogs while watching hot dogs being dunked in water, then shoved down a grown man’s throat 70 times…But really, this is all part of the fun!

Back to the feast, I took a large piece of lettuce from the toppings spread and replaced it for my bun. This one simple change saved me 140 calories, 25g carbs, 15g fat, and 4g sugar. This also turned my meal into sugar and grain free. Not to mention the nutrients I was getting from the lettuce far exceeded the empty calories I would have gotten from the hot dog bun. After topping my dog with spicy mustard and raw cheese, I was NOT missing the bun at all. Several of my friends and family members poked fun at my concoction, but the next day for lunch, when we were eating leftover hot dogs, I noticed that several of the teasers were following my lead and using lettuce wraps in place of their buns as well. This small changed sparked a movement and now I have friends and family members not only replacing their hot dog buns for lettuce wraps, but their hamburger buns, sandwich bread, and even fajita tortillas with lettuce.

This is an easy food swap that can not only save your waistline, but your cholesterol, heart health, blood sugar, and even your heartburn. Swapping any type of bread for a lettuce wrap can help you lose up to 15 pounds in just one year. Not only will you be treating your own body better with this small change, but you can also help influence your friends and family to make better health choices. Let’s begin to change the world, one small food swap at a time. When you think about it, it really is that simple.
